Televangelist Paul Crouch Dies at 79; Leaves Behind Two Mansions in Newport Beach

And it is no wonder James MacDonald is hitching his wagon to TBN.

Prometheus Unbound

The news. Paul Crouch died yesterday. He had quite the racket going, obviously, laughing all the way to the bank. This is a quote from  The New York Times obituary on him this morning (written by Emma G. Fitzsimmons):

In 2010, donations to TBN totaled $93 million. The Crouches [Paul and Jan] had two mansions in Newport Beach, Calif., and used corporate jets valued at $8 million and $49 million each.

Not houses, mansions. That pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? He became fabulously wealthy claiming to be an ambassador to someone who preached poverty (Jesus).

Details on the mansions. In 2012, The New York Times did a profile piece on Crouch’s Trinity Broadcasting Network, written by Erik Eckholm. It includes the following details about Paul and Jan’s Newport Beach mansions:

Mr. and Mrs. Crouch have his-and-her mansions one street apart in a gated community here [in Newport Beach]…

We’re going on TV, but to be clear it’s not about the fame, glory or money.

I guess Pastor MacDonald is not happy to be on radio.  He has secured a TV deal as well, on the infamous TBN network.  I frankly don’t even understand the radio thing, so I really don’t get the TV thing.  Other than to spread your fame to sell more books and get bigger and bigger advances on those future books, why spend all the time and tithe on these things?  It’s just a bunch of Christians looking for their own celebrities and feel good sermons to follow.  Folks, if going on TV doesn’t make you stop and think about what has happened to our church then I’m not sure anything will.

Where is Our Money Going?

I am outraged.  Harvest claims they are transparent, but now they are refusing to publish the weekly giving and need reports that they have always published.  They stopped putting it in the bulletin to save on costs of bulletins, fine.  Then they put it online, but they are not putting it online anymore and I cannot get anyone to answer my questions about this.  And now I’m getting an email through Walk in the Word asking for a special gift because they are a million in the hole.  This is hypocrisy.  If you want my money tell me what is happening.
